“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments. It is like the dew of Hermon, descending upon the mountains of Zion; For there the Lord commanded the blessing — Life forevermore.” Psalm 133:1-3 (1 Kings 17:3-4; 1 Kings 17:9)
I welcome you to the fifth month of the year, the month of Grace. Grace is God coming into your situation and announcing you a winner before you have even begun the race, a conqueror before the battle. It is God who is always steps ahead of the enemy.
What are divinely commanded blessings? These are blessings that those in custody of them come under divine compulsion to release to the recipients. The opinion or volition of the holders of these blessings is irrelevant and unwarranted in releasing these blessings to the recipients.
Examples of Divinely Commanded Blessings:
- The office of the prime minister in Egypt was a divinely commanded blessing to Joseph. If it depended on elections, birthright, deliberations, or debates in the National Assembly of the country, Joseph couldn’t get there. But Pharaoh was under divine compulsion to elevate Joseph to that office, and because this was so, the opposition was silenced totally on this matter (Genesis 41:38-41). Since it was a divinely commanded blessing, it lasted.
- The elevation of Mephibosheth to the estate of his father by David was a divinely commanded blessing. David was acting under a compelling force that was greater than him (2 Samuel 9:1-9).
- The feeding of Elijah by ravens, the stingiest of all birds, in the time of famine in Israel, and the release of the last meal of the Zarephath widow to him, against the law of morality and normalcy, were divinely commanded blessings (1 Kings 17:1-16).
- The good ground of the rich fool that yielded bountifully to him was a divinely commanded blessing. The ground was compelled to help the man. It was not about the man’s skills or expertise. He was not the only one that sowed but he reaped the greatest harvest from the increase of the earth (Luke 12:16-17).
- The healing of the paralytic by the pool of Bethesda is an expression of divinely commanded blessings (John 5:1-9). He was not the only sick person by the pool, and nothing qualified him to attract Jesus. There was a spirit that moved and directed Jesus to him.
Born-again believers washed by the Blood of Jesus, working in grace and mercy like the Israelites in the wilderness, will continually enjoy blessings (Psalm 78:23-29). The question now is what one must do to sustain the benefit of a divinely commanded blessing. From our text, Psalm 133:1-3, the answer appears to be “…to dwell together in unity.”
Jesus spoke about the power of unity or agreement in Matthew 18:19: “Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.” Don’t put any limitations on this scripture. Jesus says what He means. We can receive anything in line with God’s will if we agree about it in prayer.
The Greek word that Jesus used, which is translated “agree,“ comes from the word “symphonize.“ If you have ever been to a symphony, then you can appreciate the importance of agreement. At the beginning of the symphony, the orchestra warms up. This is when everyone plays on their own without considering others. The noise is atrocious. But when the conductor lifts the baton, the racket stops, and all eyes are on him. Then, with a gentle wave of the baton, the orchestra plays such heavenly music.
What makes the difference? The orchestra is in one accord. No one is on their own. And when they all play their part in synchrony, the music is lovely. On their own, the music doesn’t amount to much, but together they sound breathtaking. We, too, need to harmonize together. Jesus said that when we do, the world will come to believe in Him (see John 17:21).
The world has used the law of unity more than we believers. This is sad. In Genesis 11:1-6, we find a story in the Bible that illustrates this fact.
- The people in Babylonia began to work together, and they accomplished an enormous feat—the building of the Tower of Babel.
- Although their hearts were wrong, they were unified.
- As for the power of their unity, God said, “Nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them!” God knows the power of unity.
- Unity will work for sinners like it will work for saints. This is exactly why the sinners have made such advances, while the church is trying to keep up.
It’s time that we stop the division and strive for unity in the body of Christ. And when we do, watch out! We will become the mightiest force on this planet.
Conclusion: Divinely commanded blessing is God’s desire for all His children. The condition is very clear, “If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully keep all his commands that I am giving you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the world” (Deuteronomy 28:1). The mother of Jesus said, “…Whatever He says to you, do it.” (John 2:5). Therefore, don’t be too busy pursuing your life’s goals that you forget to share, to care, and to be there for those who need you. Remember, in the final audit, you’ll be judged by this standard, “whatever you did for one of the least…you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). Walk in total obedience, and in unity with others.
