“And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God (El-Shaddai); walk before Me and be thou perfect.” Genesis 17:1.
Introduction
I welcome you to the 6th month of the Year of Brand-New Beginning. The theme this month is a call for a perpetual walk with God. We must continue to walk with Him in excellence, not ahead of or behind Him, then you will come to realize the blessing in 1 Corinthians 2:9. It says, “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.”
The world measures potential by time, but God measures it by His presence. In Genesis 17:1, when Abraham was ninety-nine and human hope seemed spent, God revealed Himself as El-Shaddai and said, “Walk before Me and be blameless.” In that moment of limitation, God invited him into a deeper relationship.
This is striking because Abraham had already obeyed God decades earlier in Genesis 12:1 by leaving his homeland in faith. Yet after years of sacrifice and obedience, God still called him to “walk before Me.” This reveals a powerful leadership truth: walking with God is not a past experience, but a continual journey. Yesterday’s obedience cannot sustain today’s assignment.
The encouraging reality is that it is never too late to deepen your walk with God. If God could call a ninety-nine-year-old Abraham into a fresh dimension of fellowship, He can renew your story today. Before God changes a leader’s circumstances, He first deepens their understanding of who He is.
I. Divine Identity: “I Am Almighty God” (El-Shaddai)
“When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, ‘I am Almighty God…‘” (NKJV – Genesis 17:1a)
The Hebrew name used here is El-Shaddai—the All-Sufficient One, the God who is more than enough, the God of unlimited power and inexhaustible supply. God introduced Himself to Abram not merely as a helper but as the supreme authority over natural law. Abram was old, Sarah was barren, and the promise seemed hopelessly delayed. But God spoke from His own identity, not from Abram’s limitations.
Leadership Thought: Effective leaders understand that divine identity determines possibility. True spiritual leadership is not sustained by human resources or favorable conditions, but by El-Shaddai. When leaders measure situations by God instead of measuring God by situations, faith replaces panic. Your team will only rise to the level of faith you demonstrate. Therefore, build, speak, and lead according to God’s unlimited capacity. Be a Kingdom leader, not merely a secular manager.

II. What’s in a Name? (The Transformation of Identity)
“No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations.” (NKJV – Genesis 17:5)
Names in Scripture carry meaning, destiny, and identity. At this point in the narrative, the man’s name was “Abram,” meaning “exalted father.” It was almost a cruel mockery because he was entirely childless. But God changed his name to “Abraham,” meaning father of many nations. God radically changed his name before changing his physical reality.
Leadership Thought: God speaks destiny before it appears, calling what does not yet exist as though it does. Effective leaders view people and situations not only as they are, but as God intends them to be. The enemy attacks one’s identity through fear and failure, but El-Shaddai calls you chosen, redeemed, and a leader. Your past may explain your story, but it does not define your future. Great leaders also create cultures of possibility. Like Abraham, declaring his new name before Isaac was born, leaders must speak the language of the future while standing in the present.

III. Walk Before Me (The Call to Perpetual Fellowship)
“…walk before Me…” (NKJV – Genesis 17:1b)
To “walk” implies movement, progress, and daily intentionality. God did not call Abraham to build a stationary monument to honor past victories; He called him to a daily, progressive journey. “Before Me” means living consciously, transparently, and constantly in the immediate presence of a holy God.
Leadership Thought: Leadership is relational before it is functional. God desires a genuine relationship more than religious activity. Walking before God means staying aligned with His pace—not running ahead in ambition or falling behind in fear. True leadership integrity is who you are when only El-Shaddai is watching. Private obedience gives public influence spiritual weight. In ministry and leadership, it is easy to become busy working for God while neglecting to walk with Him. You may lead people and manage responsibilities while your relationship with God grows cold. Walking before Him means living with an audience of One, where your character, habits, and choices remain aligned with His heart.

IV. Be Blameless (The Standard of Integrity)
“…and be blameless.” (NKJV – Genesis 17:1c)
Blamelessness does not imply absolute, sinless perfection, for Abraham himself made clear errors both before and after this specific encounter. Rather, it speaks of wholehearted devotion, undivided loyalty, transparency of heart, and an uncompromised life. It is the steady pursuit of spiritual maturity.
Leadership Thought: The divine order is clear: God reveals Himself (Identity), man walks with Him (Relationship), and then becomes blameless (Character). Holiness and ethical leadership flow from closeness to God, not human effort alone. A blameless leader keeps their word, repents quickly, and values God’s approval above human applause. In a compromised world, character remains the greatest protection for destiny. When leaders compromise character for short-term gain, they weaken the foundation of their organization. Talent may open doors, but only integrity can sustain lasting influence.

V. How to Walk Today and Be Blameless
“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith…” (NKJV – Colossians 2:6-7)
How do we apply the timeless experience of Genesis 17 to our fast-paced, contemporary lives? To walk today and remain blameless requires a daily, deliberate decision to surrender our logic to the wisdom of the Holy Spirit.
Leadership Thought: Modern leadership often depends on strategy, intellect, and networking, but spiritual leadership operates by a higher standard. Walking blamelessly means grounding your choices in God’s Word, maintaining a strong prayer life, and remaining accountable and transparent. Grace is not permission for carnality, but empowerment to live honorably in ministry and the marketplace.
Blameless leadership also rejects shortcuts. Leaders who walk with God value integrity over speed, choose transparency over appearance, and ensure that public success is matched by private maturity.

The Call to Walk with God
Church of God, it is never too late to start, renew, or deepen your walk with God. As long as there is life in you, God is still able to rewrite your story.
Do not allow your past, your background, or your present limitations to define your future. El-Shaddai is calling you to stop depending on human strength and fully surrender to His presence. Let us rise and bring this word to the altar of prayer, aligning our lives with the pace and presence of the Almighty God.
