Text: “Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm” (Daniel 6:3, NKJV).
Welcome to May 2026! We have stepped into the fifth month of our year of “Brand New Beginnings.” In the world of numbers, five represents God’s strategic grace. It was grace that singled out Noah in a generation of chaos, and it is that same grace that will distinguish you this month (Genesis 6:8-9). As we explore the theme of Excellence, I pray that you will find yourself “Riding the Waves of Endless Grace,” shifting from the background to the forefront of your career, ministry, and family life in Jesus mighty name.
The Call to Distinction:
We have entered a season where the world is shaking, yet the Kingdom of God remains unshakable. In this hour, the Spirit of the Living God is searching for a remnant who will refuse to settle for the mediocre, the average, or the “good enough.” The Father is calling for a people who consistently choose to carry the weight of His glory into every marketplace, every boardroom, and every home.
Those who will not merely survive but will shine. Those who will not allow the dullness of the age to dim the brightness of their calling. I decree that the slumber is breaking off your life. I pray that as you read these words, the Holy Spirit will ignite a holy dissatisfaction within you — a hunger to represent the King with the precision and beauty He deserves.
The Anatomy of an Excellent Spirit:
To walk in excellence is not to strive for perfectionism, which is a yoke of bondage; rather, it is to reflect the very nature of the Creator. Biblically, excellence (Hebrew Yattir) speaks of that which is preeminent, surpassing, and extraordinary. While the secular world views excellence as a competitive edge or a high standard of performance, the believer understands it as a fruit of the Spirit’s indwelling.
- The Root: Surrender to the Holy Spirit.
- The Fruit: Quality that demands attention from even the ungodly.
- The Goal: The glorification of Jesus Christ in the earth.
Learning Points in the School of Excellence:
1. The Divine Source of Excellence – “O LORD, our Lord; How excellent is Your name in all the earth, who have set Your glory above the heavens!” (Psalm 8:1, NKJV). God is called excellent because He is the standard of all beauty, order, and power. His name carries a weight of “majesty” that defines how we should approach our own assignments. We do not work to become excellent; we work because “the Excellent One” lives within us.
2. Distinction Through Diligence – “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men” (Proverbs 22:29, KJV). Daniel did not reach the palace by accident; he reached it through a combination of prayer and profound competence. Diligence is the bridge between a dream and a destiny. When we sharpen our skills, we create a platform for our witnesses. Good intentions are not a substitute for great execution.
3. The Power of a Surpassing Spirit – “And in all matters of wisdom and understanding about which the king examined them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers who were in all his realm” (Daniel 1:20, NKJV). A high-performing team in the Kingdom is one that operates “ten times better” because they have access to revelations the world does not possess. This is not about arrogance; it is about an “excellent spirit” that solves problems others cannot solve. Being a Christian is not an excuse for being unprofessional.
4. Walking in Apostolic Precision – “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6, NASB). The Apostles did not just preach; they organized, they strategized, and they laid foundations with architectural precision. Excellence is the “good work” of God being completed through human hands. That is, the execution and manifestation of our calling.
The Standard of the Great Cloud:
Consider the cloud of witnesses. Joseph managed the empire’s economy so well that the nation was saved from famine. Bezalel was filled with the Spirit to work in gold and silver with artistic mastery (Exodus 31:3-5). Paul, the tentmaker, spoke to philosophers and kings alike with a mind sharpened by the Word.
- Integrity: Excellence without character is a facade.
- Order: God never dwells in chaos; He hovers over it to bring structure.
- Passion: An excellent soul is a fervent soul.
Practical Keys to an Excellent Life:
- Audit Your Output: Review your work as if you were presenting it directly to the Throne (Colossians 3:23).
- Kill Procrastination: Treat your time as a holy seed that must be sown with wisdom (Ephesians 5:16).
- Seek Mastery: Invest in your “guided knowledge” and professional skills to remain relevant in your field (2 Timothy 2:15).
- Maintain Your Altar: Remember that Daniel’s excellence was fueled by his three-times-a-day prayer life (Daniel 6:10).
Conclusion: The Mantle of the Preeminent
Excellence is the garment of the Kingdom. A language the world understands, even when they do not understand our God. When you walk in this grace, you stop begging for a seat at the table and start being invited to lead.
“Quality is not an act, it is a habit.” — Will Durant
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things” (Philippians 4:8, NKJV).
